Symtpoms

What problems can my scar cause?

Scar Tissue is a normal part of healing, however it does not have the same properties as our skin, and this can cause unwanted symptoms.

Do you have pain and/or tightness at around your scar?

Is your scar itchy?

Do you have numbness or altered sensation?

Is your scar impacting your day to day function?

Do you have reduced movement?

Do you have an increased sensitivity at the scar?

Specialist Cancer Scar Therapy

My scar is part of my cancer treatment

You may benefit from Specialist Cancer Scar Therapy if you have had surgical treatments such as:

  • Breast Surgeries (Lumpectomy, Mastectomy & Reconstruction)
  • Axillary Node Clearance and Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy
  • Abdominal Surgeries
  • Skin Grafts

How our scars heal is largely variable between us, and even within the same body. However, some factors can effect our healing rate such as:

  • Infection at the wound post-op
  • The number of surgeries you have had at the same site - this may apply if margins were not clear the first time, or perhaps you have previously had another unrelated surgery in the same area.
  • Comorbidities such as Diabetes can slow down healing rate
  • Radiotherapy - this is additional inflammation on the area leading to more scar tissue being laid down.
  • Radiotherapy burns
  • Chemotherapy - this can slow down wound healing and supress the immune system leading to an increased risk of infection.

As well as helping to improve the symptoms outlined above, Specialist Oncology Scar Therapy can also help improve common complications of Surgical Treatments such as:

  1. Axillary web syndrome (better known as cording)
  2. Capsular contracture following breast implants
  3. Radiation Fibrosis following Radiotherapy (increased scarring, tissue stiffness and pain)
  4. Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars
  5. Fat Necrosis
  6. Scar Therapy can contribute to managing lymphodema (Alongside a Lymphedema Specialist)

If you are struggling with any of the above symptoms, please reach out to us for help. The good news is that it's never too late to treat a scar!
