Oncology Physiotherapy is a specialised service for patients going through, or who have been through cancer treatment. There is a vast amount of evidence supporting the benefits of Exercise Therapy at all stages of a patient’s cancer journey. Cancer treatment is continuously improving and thanks to this people are living longer, but we want people to live longer and live well!
Prehabilitation refers to the process of preparing your body for cancer treatment and exercise is an important component of this. There are clear links between higher fitness levels and improved recovery and fewer post-op complications.
Unfortunately, various cancer treatments can leave you with unwanted side effects however exercise and education can help to improve the following:
- Your strength and cardiovascular fitness to prepare you for your cancer treatment, improve your recovery and prevent reoccurrence
- Cancer related fatigue
- Side effects of cancer treatments
- Chemotherapy induced cognitive dysfunction
- The effects of peripheral neuropathy such as reduced balance and mobility
- Self-confidence, mental health and well-being
- Side effects of the menopause (This can occur suddenly when starting hormonal treatment)
- Reduce the risk of lymphoedema
- Preservation of bone health if you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis
